    Pythagoras of Mnesarchus

    Pythagoras (Greek: Πυθαγόρας), was born in Milet on the Eastern Aegean island of Samos, Greece between 580 and 572 BC and died between 500 and 490 BC in Metapontum, Lucania.

    Pythagoras's father was Mnesarchus (a Phoenician merchant from Tyre), while his mother was Pythais (a native of Samos). His name led him to be associated with Pythian Apollo; Aristippus explained his name by saying, "He spoke (agor-) the truth no less than did the Pythian (Pyth-)."[1]

    He was one of the 6th Century B.C.E.'s most charismatic multi-disciplinary thinkers, a Greek religious leader (founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism), a philosopher who made developments in astronomy, mathematics, and the theory of music.
