Early Life and Career
John Cougar Mellencamp, born Johnny Cougar on October 7, 1951, got his start in music as a teenager in a local rock band.
Despite minor brushes with the law, he found a job in a factory in an attempt to "straighten out." However, after hearing Bruce Springsteen's early albums, he decided at 24 to pursue music professionally and moved to New York City.
A year later, he released his debut album.
Critical Acclaim and Breakthrough
Mellencamp's initial albums failed to impress critics, who dismissed him as a Springsteen clone. However, he persisted in developing a unique blend of hard rock and folk rock.
